Axial Fan

Axial Fan

The purpose of the fan in the cooling tower is to take air at the bottom of the tower and move it upwards and outwards in the opposite direction of the warm condenser water at the top of the unit. The air will carry the heat to the atmosphere through the evaporating water of the cooling tower.

Fan blades are the most important equipment for cooling towers. Therefore, fan selection criteria should be made to ensure maximum efficiency and sufficient fresh air flow. Aluminum and fiberglass-reinforced polyester fan blades must be statically balanced for smooth and trouble-free operation. The blades are attached to epoxy coated or galvanized steel core plates with aluminum brackets and stainless steel bolts.

Fans have the ability to be mounted on a horizontal or vertical shaft. Fan blades can be adjusted at different angles on the steel hub they are mounted on.

Fan blades can be produced from different sizes and materials according to the design values of the tower.

What is the axial fan in a water cooling tower?

An axial fan is a type of fan commonly used in water cooling towers. Its primary function is to draw air through the cooling tower, facilitating the heat exchange process by dissipating heat from the warm water circulating inside the tower. The axial fan gets its name because it operates along the same axis as the airflow, meaning the air flows parallel to the fan's axis of rotation. Here are the key characteristics and functions of axial fans in water cooling towers:

  • Airflow Direction: In axial fans, the airflow direction is parallel to the fan's axis. This means the fan pulls air in along its axis and expels it in the same direction, creating a continuous airflow through the cooling tower.
  • Design: Axial fans are designed with a hub at the center and several blades radiating outward from the hub. The shape and pitch of the blades are crucial for generating sufficient airflow and pressure to draw air through the cooling tower.
  • Function: The axial fan creates a low-pressure area inside the cooling tower, drawing ambient air through the tower. As the air passes through the tower, it comes into contact with the water-saturated fill media. Heat from the water is transferred to the air through evaporation, cooling the water in the process. The cooled water collects in the basin at the bottom of the cooling tower and is recirculated for further cooling.
  • Variable Speed Operation: In some cooling towers, axial fans are equipped with variable frequency drives (VFDs) or variable speed drives (VSDs). These devices allow the speed of the fan to be adjusted based on the cooling load, optimizing energy consumption and improving overall efficiency.
  • Materials and Corrosion Resistance: Axial fans used in water cooling towers are often constructed from materials like fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) or coated steel to resist corrosion. Corrosion resistance is crucial because the fan operates in a wet environment.
  • Noise Reduction: Manufacturers design axial fans with noise-reducing features to minimize the noise generated during operation. This is especially important in industrial and commercial settings where noise pollution needs to be kept at a minimum.
Overall, axial fans play a vital role in water cooling towers by ensuring a continuous flow of air through the tower, enabling efficient heat exchange and cooling of the circulating water. Their design and operation significantly contribute to the overall effectiveness and performance of the cooling tower system.
