Grid Fill

Grid Fill

Splash Grid Fill is a popular choice for use in all applications where the water quality is very poor. It is suitable for dirty cooling waters with a high content of suspended solids, oils, and the like. In accordance with the thermal design conditions, the filler is hung on the structure by means of stainless steel wires according to the number of layers. Each panel is rotated 180 degrees and hung on a lower floor. Thanks to this, the water is broken down at the maximum level.

How Grid Fill works in water cooling towers ?Grid fill, also known as grid or cellular fill, is a type of cooling tower fill material used in water cooling towers. It consists of a series of closely spaced, parallel bars that form a grid pattern. The bars are arranged in a way that creates open spaces or "cells" within the fill structure. Grid fill is designed to facilitate efficient heat exchange between the hot water flowing over the fill and the air passing through the cooling tower.

Here's how grid fill works in water cooling towers:

  • Water Distribution: Hot water from industrial processes or HVAC systems is evenly distributed over the top of the grid fill by a distribution system, usually consisting of pipes and nozzles. The water flows through the grid fill material.
  • Film Formation: As the water flows through the open cells of the grid fill, it forms a thin film on the surfaces of the bars. This film allows for maximum surface area contact between the water and the air, promoting heat transfer.
  • Airflow: Simultaneously, ambient air is drawn into the cooling tower by the fan system. This air passes through the grid fill, coming into contact with the thin film of water on the bars.
  • Heat Exchange: Heat from the hot water is transferred to the air as they come into contact through the grid fill. The heat causes the water to evaporate partially, cooling the remaining water in the process.
  • Evaporation and Cooling: The partial evaporation of water removes heat energy from the remaining water, effectively cooling it down. The cooled water then collects at the bottom of the cooling tower basin, ready to be recirculated back to the industrial process for further cooling.
  • Air Discharge: The now-warmed and moisture-laden air exits the cooling tower through the top, and it is released into the atmosphere.
Grid fill designs are particularly effective in promoting turbulent mixing of air and water, maximizing the contact surface area between the two mediums. This enhanced contact facilitates efficient heat transfer, making grid fill a popular choice in many cooling tower systems. It's worth noting that while grid fill is effective, the choice of fill material can vary based on specific cooling tower requirements, including the cooling load, water quality, and environmental factors. Different types of fill materials, such as splash fill or film fill, may be used in cooling towers based on the particular needs of the application.
